New Website is Live and Kicking!

It’s been a long time coming, and now it’s finally here: the fitter, happier, more productive Flying Dog Films website. Our ugly little caterpillar of a website has turned into a beautiful butterfly! Sniff. Was that a little too dramatic? Oh well. We’re excited. The new site is going to let us showcase more videos [...]

Ooh la la at the Brouhaha

Brouhaha flyer

Those devoted Flying Dog Blog readers (hi mom) may remember all the way back to the bygone days of Aug. 10th, when we posted that our World On Fire music video had won first place at the August Film Slam and would be moving on to the Brouhaha Film Festival. Well, the Brouhaha Film Festival has come and gone, so if you were depending on this blog to remind you when it was, you totally misplaced your trust. Bummer. On a happier note, we just found out that World on Fire was selected to be in the “Best of Brouhaha” side panel at the upcoming Florida Film Festival! Boy, it’s really amazing what $10,000 in bribes, a little blackmail, and veiled threats against stubborn juror’s grandmothers can do.

So, make sure you make it to the Florida Film Festival, April 9th-18th of 2010. And don’t count on this blog to remind you, ok? ‘Cuz we probably won’t. Here’s a picture of the Brouhaha fest marquee so you can pretend like you were there:

The Nikon Canon Rap

Just to be clear; We had nothing to do with this video at all beyond maybe watching it a few times. Its a decent little rap parody of the Nikon Canon rivalry, but what’s much more interesting is the photographer behind this. His name is Joey Lawrence and at 19 He’s got an impressive amount of high end and very professional work. It really pisses me off just how good he actually is. But don’t take my word for it; check him out at Joeyl.com

Flying Dog Crashes the Superbowl

So over the weekend we decided to put something together for the Doritos crash the Superbowl ad contest.  It was mainly just an excuse to make our friend dress up like a giant chip, but it turned out pretty good anyway.  The first and last shots are done with the RED camera and the rest is HVX with a Letus adapter.  Shot and edited by Matt H and Chris Grieder.  Check it out.

Gutter King Red Carpet Madness!

This last Thursday was the red carpet premiere of Gutter King, a coming-of-age fight flick written and directed by friend o’ the Flying Dog Keith Alan Morris. Keith is an indie-film maniac, and has been working like a madman these last few years to bring the movie together. Flying Dog’s Matt Hutchens lugged around a really heavy Red camera as DP for the movie, and Matt Tinley worked as DIT, as well as helping out a bit with editing and a few b-camera shoots.

The premiere was a huge success, with sold out screenings, limos, a red carpet walk, live dj-ing, motorcycle gangs, and even a zombie or two. The only thing it lacked was Joan Rivers, or maybe Kanye West jumping up in the middle of the screening and talking about some other coming-of-age fight movie he liked better. Lucky attendees were treated to a sneak preview of Keith’s upcoming zombie/sci-fi movie, Driving the Dead. That’s probably why we saw zombies at the event, unless we’re in the middle of some sort of low-key zombie epidemic we’re not yet aware of. If you are aware of a low-key zombie epidemic in the Orlando area, please let us know at info@flyingdogfilms.com.

If you haven’t seen the trailer for Gutter King yet, check out the Gutter King official site. And keep checking the site for more info on Driving the Dead, if it pleases you. Which it should.

HP Photosmart Competition – Two New Ads!!

current_logo_ae-300x225So, you may or may not have have noticed an absence of posts on the blog this last month. Perhaps you were thinking to yourself, “Self, it seems quite safe to assume, based off of the empirical data I see before me, that the blokes here at Flying Dog Films have not had much goings ons between the dates of August the 24th and September the 28th. I shall scoff at them!” But you couldn’t be further from the truth! And besides, it’s rude to scoff. The truth of the matter is, we’ve been busy working on not one, but two (that’s twice as many as one!) ads for an ongoing competition at Current.com. photosmart small

The two ads are for a brand spanking new HP Printer-  The Photosmart Premium with Touchsmart Web. It’s a printer that can connect wirelessly to the internet without the aid of a computer, and has a cool touchscreen to boot. But why should I write about it? Go see for yourself:

New Weekly Segment — Bands You Should Know About

So it’s no secret that we at Flying Dog Films love music. I mean, making music videos is a big part of what we do for a living, so it’d be a bit odd if we didn’t really love music– kind of like a professional synchronized swimmer who didn’t really like choreographed swimming, just wearing bizarre sequined bathing suits and nose plugs. So– that being said, we’ve decided to start a weekly post about synchronized swimming great bands we have a deep appreciation for.

It’s always a little bit infuriating to me how much great music is out there that lots of people are unaware of. Don’t get me started on a rant about the state of radio stations today (I can go on for hours) – the short version of that rant is that most radio stations only play a stale cycle of 40 or so songs that have been picked by a Clear Channel board of directors somewhere in Nashville. That means there are lots and lots of bands out there that don’t get noticed– even though their music is fresher and generally more creative than what you hear on the radio. So, hopefully this weekly column can turn you on to some new sounds you may not have know about otherwise.

Ok, enough ranting. My first pick for band you should know about is a gem of a group called The Weakerthans.

The best way I can describe The Weakerthans is that they’re a low octane punk  group from Winnipeg that dashes in liberal amounts of slide guitar, ballads, and other folk element into their music. Their songs are clever and fresh- John K. Samson doesn’t just write a song about lost love, he writes it from the perspective of a tortured public bus driver who has to pass the house of his lost love every day on his monotonous route. They write songs about curling, a house cat pleading with his owner to break out of his self-destructive cycle of self-pity, and Michel Foucalt dining with a nostalgic retired explorer of the Artic– great stuff, all penned with clever turns of phrases and conceits.

I picked up the band’s third LP, Reconstruction Site, on a whim, and my first impression of it was, “Hmm, slightly quirky punk/rock band with some catchy songs.”

But then the album found a little place in my heart and began to grow… and grow… and grow. Now I absolutely love every single song on that album. There are very few albums I come back to over and over again, but Reconstruction Site is one of them. So do yourself a favor and pick it up. Here’s a video of ‘The Reasons’ from Reconstruction Site to get you started. You can find more videos and some free mp3s at their website.

We’re not Dead.. Maybe Undead

If you’ve actually been relying on our awesome blog to stay up to date with all the goings on in the world, I’m afraid you’re a little behind the times.  It turns out we’re better at making videos than blogging which I think we can live with.  To quickly sum things up; Iran, Libya, and Venezuela are still crazy and I’m still paying for healthcare.  In other news we have been pretty busy.

This last weekend FlyingDogFilms helped UFO tech shoot their new a new movie trailer for – Driving The Dead-.  The film will be a mixture of Horror and Scifi.  It’s mainly a zombie flic but set a little way in the future and with the main character being a CG robot.  Nearly 70 extras show up to be made into zombies by the four makeup artists.    The trailer was shot with two Red cameras and the robot is being added to the footage as we speak.  Check out some of the pics from the shoot below.

Green Room Orlando

Green Room Orlando is a nifty website that highlights goings-ons of film, tv, and digital media production in the Central Florida area. They just wrote a quick article about the Enzian Filmslam, which mentions Flying Dog Films. So, check it out here.
Or, if you’d like to see photos of the event, including pictures of our Post-Production Producer, Matt Tinley, standing on stage looking awkward, jump over here. Cheers!
